A Summer Like No Other!

A Summer Like No Other!

Right now, we of course all have the responsibility of following  physical distancing protocol. But, does this have you feeling like you’re also distancing yourself from all the fun to be had this summer? Maybe for you, it already feels completely different from the previous summers you’ve experienced. And maybe it is. But, I’m here to remind you that this summer, while different, can be viewed more as a gift than a burden. Totally being that glass half full person and I hope I can help you have a summer like no other!

The ultimate memories I have of summer are when I was a child, running wild and free until being reigned in just in time for school. We played outside until the streetlights came on. Played in forts we built ourselves on the outskirts of town and rode our bikes through the park. When we wanted to relax, we would go buy an ice cream and sit on the playground swings. While swinging we’d chat about whose mom we could convince into letting us have a sleepover.

And at the end of the day, your feet should be dirty, your hair messy, and your eyes sparkling – Shanti

It may seem that all your fun was canceled between concerts, music festivals, weddings, and major travel plans. I am here to tell you that maybe this summer is a gift, where you can reconnect with your child-like adventure and find joy in the simple things.

This article was inspired by my younger cousins who recently had me building sandcastles and playing games. At first, I was a little hesitant and just wanted to continue to tan or read. However, because I love them so much I agreed to join in. To my surprise, I had so much fun.  The sandcastle building turned into using our imagination and building skills to create a sand version of the New York City and Hide and Seek had us all laughing, running, and screaming with joy. Not only did this bring so much excitement to our evening but we did it all without any devices in our hands and it felt great. What I realized is that those adolescent activities that are so simple, are what make the best memories and help you to connect to your loved ones. So if you’re looking for a few pieces of advice from one optimist to another on how to have a nostalgic and magical summer – stay tuned.

Ride your Bike

This one is not only so much fun but great exercise, I recommend just hopping on your bikes with no big destination. You can take turns following each other or biking in places with less traffic. This was our main form of transportation as a child.  As we grew up it became my least used version of transportation. This is an activity you can do alone to clear your mind, with your partner, or something to do with little ones.

Play the Game

This one is a big one to remember how fun it can be to use your imagination! Maybe your usual gathering spot for your group of friends is a local bar or pub and now you are stuck in your backyard. You don’t necessarily have to play Hide & Seek. Sometimes the most fun I have had with my adult friends is during a game night. Things like Charades, Catchphrase, Pictionary, or hey maybe you do try Hide & Seek.

Wander

You don’t always need a plan as to what you want to do outside. Maybe you take a different route than you’d normally walk. Or maybe you explore a trail close to home you’ve never done. I think wandering is less formal than something like planning a strenuous hike but just simply wandering an area like you never have before.

Not all those who wander are lost – J.R.R Tolkien

If you have access to lakes or rivers and water equipment I would suggest paddling. Take a kayak or canoe on an epic exploration. We paddled a creek across from my families cabin as early as 12 years old. Just recently we tried it again with the same adventurous spirit from when we were 12.

Dance in the Rain

This one I love to do. I always enjoy a rainy day especially in the summer when the air is still warm but it’s pouring outside. When we were kids my mom used to let us put on our bathing suits and run to the backyard and jump on the trampoline in the downpour. We also used to love to swim in the rain at our families cabin. Maybe this is just a reminder to you that if you get caught in the rain somewhere to not be frustrated but enjoy the simplicity of the moment.

Put your rain gear on, go for a swim, jump in a puddle, or dance in the rain!

Play in the Dirt!

I seriously suggest heading to the beach for the day and simply building a sandcastle. Make it a competition with your friends/family or simply team up and create a sand version of your favorite landscape. Other simple things that bring joy when being at the beach, is swim! Do a handstand in the water, try a somersault, or simply see how long you can stay afloat. It sounds silly but I assure you it can bring you so much amusement and satisfaction. And maybe one more thing – laugh until it hurts. May this summer bring you nostalgia, health, wellness, and beautiful new memories.
