Gifting Experiences for the Holiday Season

holiday season

Every time the holiday season comes around I struggle with finding the perfect Christmas gifts. I come from a family where the only response I get when I ask Christmas gift ideas, is “I don’t want anything.” I would love to say I am a mind reader, but I’m not, and it can make shopping for gifts extremely difficult. For years I have struggled with gift-giving.

Though, when I had my son, it was like a light bulb went on. When people asked me what to get him for Christmas, I started focusing on things that had longevity instead of things that he would grow out of or stop using. I began to see the value of gifts that provide experiences rather than ten minutes of joy. Experiences provide a lasting memory for years to come. This holiday season, my gift to you is this list of gift ideas centred around experiences, rather than trivial items.

The Gift of a Getaway

Last year my in-laws gave Austin and me the most thoughtful Christmas gift. A trip to a beautiful hotel in Caledon called the Millcroft Inn (I definitely recommend staying here). It was something we would never have purchased for ourselves, but it was something we loved doing. It was one gift that provided us with memories and a relaxing weekend. This gift was something we will treasure for a long time.

The Gift of a Spa Day

Sometimes you just need a spa day. Seriously. This is a gift that people tend to shy away asking for, mostly because it can be costly. Though, it is a thoughtful gift that provides an experience that leaves the person feeling just a little bit better. You also don’t have to buy a specific service but could give them a gift certificate. I recommend finding one that has hot springs. It gives them a full day at the spa and just adds to the overall experience.

The Gift of Tickets

Whether their into sports, concerts or the ballet, tickets to their favourite past-time provide an experience you just can’t top. The memories they’ll make just can’t compare to an item that may only last a year or two. An added bonus is when the person giving the tickets also gets to tag along. Not because you get to go, but because you get to see first hand the happiness from your gift.

The Gift of Dinner for Two

Whether they have a favourite restaurant or one they have been dying to try, gifting a dinner for two is great for everyone on your list. It allows them to be able to take someone with them or, if it’s for a significant other, the opportunity to spend time together.

The Gift of Personalization

I know I have been preaching about gifting experiences and not things, but this falls under a different category. Giving someone a personalized item is a gift that keeps on giving. Every time they look at the item, they will be reminded of you. Also, it’s the perfect opportunity to support a local business during the holiday season. Etsy has some great small business owners with a variety of personalized items, so you will find the perfect gift for everyone on your list.

Finding the perfect Christmas gifts can be exhausting and downright stressful. Take away that stress and focus on presents that provide lasting memories for the person. They will appreciate the thought and love that went into the gift.
