Homemade Chocolate Bars for Valentine’s Day

Chocolate Bars

Valentine’s day is almost here, so there’s no better time for homemade chocolate bars. These are an easy DIY dupe for artisanal chocolate without the hefty price-tag. The flavour combinations are endless, so make sure your creative juices are flowing! I’ll give you the basic formula (and a few flavour ideas). Then, the rest is up to you!

Specialty Equipment:

The only special equipment you’ll need is the moulds (the ones I used are available on Amazon). However, be aware that these make thinner bars and will not be suitable for filling. They are perfect for our purposes, though.

Required Ingredients:

  • Approximately 70g of melting chocolate per bar.

I used white, milk, and dark Belgian chocolate wafers from Bulk Barn, but you can also cheat and melt your favourite chocolate bar. Just make sure it is around 70 grams and doesn’t contain add-ins. Personally, I’ll stick to the wafers because I’m not a fan of added wax.

Chocolate Bar Instructions:

  1. Melt the chocolate in a bain-marie. Alternatively, microwave it at 10-second intervals string the chocolate fully after each round.
  2. Pour the chocolate evenly into the moulds leaving space to add toppings without overflow.
  3. Carefully lift and drop each one very slightly to release air bubbles.
  4. Smooth the surface using the dull side of a butter knife or an offset spatula.
  5. Sprinkle in your toppings. Make sure they are contacting the melted chocolate.
  6. Place the filled moulds on a cookie sheet in the fridge until fully set. Then, carefully pop them out and wrap your finished chocolate bars as desired!

Suggested flavours:

  • Marbled cookies and cream: This one looks a bit like a cow, and I love it! Melt 35g of white and 35g of milk chocolate. Then, mix a tablespoon of Oreo crumbs into the white chocolate. Pour both in ‘spots’ throughout the mould DO NOT MIX. Top with chopped up Oreos or more cookie crumbs.
  • Fruit and nut: Use your favourite trail mix! I love the addition of dried cherries!
  • Salted pretzel and peanut: If you’re a salt lover, you can add another sprinkling of coarse salt.
  • Sprinkles! Okay…it isn’t a flavour…but it’s cute, and I regret nothing…

Enjoy, and be sure to tag us in any photos you take!
