Let me just say motivation is a FICKLE creature.
We all can benefit from easy ways to stay motivated when it comes to fitness. Especially at this time of year in Ontario when it gets dark at 6pm and it’s only going to get worse! Pair that with low energy, packed schedules and oversized expectations, making maintaining a regular workout routine quite a struggle!
As a personal trainer people often think I am constantly motivated and driven to work out, but that just is not the case. Ever since becoming a full time trainer and fitness instructor and working 12 hour days in the gym I’ve actually struggled with motivation more than ever. I find myself finishing my day and not wanting to spend a second longer thinking about exercise, movement patterns or frankly just staring at the same four walls anymore! If you can relate because let’s face it the struggle is real, check out my top five ways to stay motivated.
1. Talk about it!
Talk about your goals and your plan of action. This will keep you accountable and excited! Did you know there is actually research to back this up? A new research out of The Ohio State University concludes that “people tend to be more committed to their goals after they share them with someone who they see as “higher status,” or whose opinions they respect.” So tell your friends what you’re doing!
2. Nothing worth doing is ever easy.
A cliche maybe, but it’s true “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. Remind yourself that small steps lead to the big picture. Enjoy the journey and be proud of the small accomplishments along the way. Celebrate yourself, and reward yourself with a new workout shirt or pair of tights if you meet some of your small goals!
3. Write it down!
Visual reminders of your goals can go a long way. Buy some cute sticky notes or an adorable agenda… it helps. This one here if from Amazon and it’s super cute.
4. You are your only competition.
Remember this one especially! Stop comparing yourself to other people. Everyone has their own starting place and has a unique journey.
5. Try group fitness.
Switch things up and try something new. Workout with friends or family and self educate yourself on proper exercise form and nutrition. Having a support system and a good general understanding of technique
Remember, it’s not always smooth sailing! We all struggle at certain points but the goal is to make those periods of time shorter and shorter! Hopefully, these tips can help you stay motivated on your fitness journey!
