Life lessons always come a little after you need them. This week, I turned 23 and if I could go back in time there are a million things I would tell my younger self, but I’ve distilled it down to the key messages.
Twenty Three Life Lessons for Twenty Three Years
- Stress levels and sleepless nights are not a point of pride.
- Never get pressured into a relationship – if it feels wrong it probably is.
- Relaxation will help you work effectively.
- There are people in the world who would kill to have your problems, but that doesn’t mean you should feel ashamed to be upset.
- Everyone hates their nose (and there isn’t anything wrong with yours).
- It’s never too late to walk away from something that is bad for you.
- You’re probably going to regret that pixie cut, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it.
- You won’t always get the praise you feel you deserve. That being the case, don’t work with praise in mind.
- Your work has value outside of praise. As a matter of fact, praise is the least of it.
- Learn to say no to added responsibility. Though ‘yes’ feels good, you’ll regret it later.
- Kind acts feel better when no one is looking.
- Your brother will be your best friend one day. Be nice to him.
- Prioritize sleep, and cherish your rest. You’ll understand how much it’s worth after a night shift.
- People who want to be in your life will make the time.
- Material possessions can’t make you happier.
- Don’t let perfection get in the way of completion. Done is always better than perfect.
- More caffeine will just make you exhausted and jumpy.
- Don’t let fear of failure prevent you from trying.
- Invest in good food, your body and mind will thank you.
- Asking for help doesn’t make you weak. Understanding your limitations is a strength.
- Anger isn’t productive. Conversely, neither is pretending you aren’t angry.
- You’ll know love when you find it and, by the way, you will.
- Don’t overthink it.
What about you? Take a minute to think about it and write down one lesson for every year you’ve been alive. Keep your list safe, and add to it every year.
