Meet Samantha Flynn

Samantha Flynn- Lifestyle Blogger- Pretty & Smart Co

It’s June PS&Co. ladies! Meet our contributor of the month Samantha Flynn. Samantha has been a contributor for us since October 2019 and you’ve probably seen her write about being a working mom of boys, planing cute date nights, traveling (oh the days) and sharing life hacks.

She has shared some tidbits about herself so her readers can get to know her a little better. Without further ado meet our very own, Samantha.

Name or nickname if you have one

Samantha, but most people call me Sam

What makes you feel pretty and smart/what does it mean to you:

While a flowy dress and smart looking bag over my shoulder always helps, I pride myself on staying up-to-date with current events.  As a bit of an introvert, it’s always been a struggle to strike up a conversation with strangers, but I find that the more knowledge/information I can take in via the news, books, podcasts etc. gives me that extra boost of self-assurance when I feel inclined to let my husband take the lead in conversation with unknowns.  The growing ability (and I’m still working on this!) to hold a conversation with anyone in a crowded room, regardless of age, gender, academic background etc. has really helped me to build confidence over the years.

One piece of advice to your younger self: Girl, slow down! In my late teens, early twenties, I was extremely impatient.  I worked two side jobs in high school and two side jobs in university – I was exhausting myself mentally and physically for no good reason.  Looking back, all the stress of being constantly on the move and fatigued wasn’t worth it.  It damaged my relationships with friends and led to unhealthy lifestyle habits.  I’m pleased to say that today, I take solace in my days off and I put a firm stop on my workday at dinner time.  I don’t check emails in the evening and I focus on family as much as I can.

What you’re reading/watching/listening to:

I’m reading…a lot of material for work unfortunately! Working from home with kids is no easy feat and in every spare minute I’m trying to get caught up.  I’m currently watching Billions and I LOVE it! If you’re looking for your next series to spend hours on the couch binge-watching with your jaw on the floor – start this one!  It’s packed with amazing talent that you may recognize (ahem, Damien Lewis from “Homeland”) and Paul Giamatti.  I won’t leave any further spoilers but if you love a good drama/love story – this one’s for you.

I’m listening to my favourite podcast – VOUS Church.  While admittedly, I wasn’t raised in a religious household and I don’t regularly attend church today; this podcast is focused primarily on hope and uplifting messages of encouragement.  I’m hooked to Pastor Rich’s positive energy and modern teachings of the gospel.  He even delves into the nitty gritty of everyday life such as our affinity for Instagram, Facebook etc.  When I’m not listening to Pastor Rich, I am probably listening to a mix of Chase Rice and Birds of Tokyo to get me through my work day.

Favourite thing in your closet right now:

These hand woven raffia slides from Palmetto Handmade.

Biggest role model or icon (fashion, career, personal or otherwise):

Jackie Kennedy Onassis (or commonly known as “Jackie O”).  For her personality, wit, fashion-sense – I just love her.  To me, she’s the epitome of confidence and strength.

Best word to describe you and why?

Calm.  In my final year of university, one of my roommates was from the maritimes and I always admired his calm, cool, collected personality.  There really wasn’t anything that could ruin this guy’s day.  His relaxed nature inspired me to adapt something similar for myself.  I try to remain as balanced as possible and I don’t get too stressed over work or minor hurdles at home.  I let as much roll off my back as possible.

What is your fitness or wellness routine:

I am an avid user of the Fitplan App as, let’s face it, I don’t have time to go to the gym.  While users must pay an annual fee for the app, it gives you access to a variety of different training programs and trainers to guide you through your workouts and track your progress.  The app also features great 30 minute home workouts if you’re like me and can’t make time for the gym!

What is your favourite thing to write about?

Relationships.  Whether I’m writing about my partner, Ben, my kids, co-workers, or friends, I greatly value strong human connections.  I attribute my positive outlook on life to the strong relationships i’ve built and while I’m no expert, I like to project a bit of that “warm and fuzzy” feeling that I wake up with everyday.  I love building a “feel good” read from the heart.

What is it like being a mom of boys?

HEAVEN! I wouldn’t have it any other way.  My most treasured friends in life have just so happened to be primarily male and I truly believe I was always meant to have boys for this reason.  They are so full of energy and funny and…gross but I can relate to them on the deepest levels and I love our connection.  My hubby loves to share the spotlight, but truthfully, those boys belong to “mama!”

What is your guilty pleasure?

Overpriced caffeinated beverages.

Fun fact: Before having my first baby, I hated coffee and pop.  Due to my first son’s extreme sleep deprivation tactics, I took up the daily cup of java habit and I’ve never looked back.

What is the next place you plan to travel to (as soon as we’re allowed of course)?

Washington, DC.  It’s rich political history, decadent dining, and immaculately kept parks/walkways have kept me yearning to return.  I’m also a huge fan of the Francis Ford Coppola Godfather films and one of my favourite scenes from the second film takes place in the Washington Hotel (now known as the “W” Hotel) which is home to one of the most spectacular rooftop patios in the City.  Best season to visit: early April when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom and the weather is perfect.

Favourite quote:

“You have to fight because you can’t count on anyone else fighting for you…. To get anything of real value, you have to fight for it.” – Ronda Rousey

Zodiac sign:

Aquarius
