Change in seasons is always a good excuse to clean up your closet. Not only it is a good idea to save time when getting ready but you might also find extra free space to allow you to go on a shopping spree! Emily in Paris has awaken the parisian fashionista in us. So it is time to get into closet organization 101 !
Store seasonal clothing
First step is to store those summer dresses away! All of your summer stuff must go. There is no need to unnecessarily take up that valuable space. I personally prefer when the closet is not jam packed so I can space things a little to allow me to properly see each clothing piece. Talking about properly seeing pieces of clothing, I also prefer to opt for clear storage boxes to put my clothes away. This allows me to quickly find a clothing piece like my favourite white summer dress for a tropical vacation destination.
Know what to hang
Now that all the stuff you will not wear for the next few months is gone, separate and decide what you chose to hang. This one is a little more personal. For example, some people prefer to not hang sweaters and hoodies but rather stack them on shelves. Others, truly try hang almost everything. I don’t feel strong either way. I prefer to hang as much as possible except the obvious “do not hang” clothes like pjs, gym clothes, etc. But then again, I do not like things too tight since I like to space things a little for better view. Use your own judgement and stick to what works for you.
Organize by category (pants, dresses, tops, etc.)
This one seems obvious to me but you would be surprised by the messy closets I have encountered in my life. I am a little OCD with this one. I wouldn’t just stop at separating bottoms and tops. You also need to organize bye subcategories. You should separate your tops by types like cardigan, sweater, dress shirt, blouse, shirt (long sleeve, mid-sleeve, short sleeve), etc. And the same idea for your bottoms.
Separate colours
You know how I just told you to organize by subcategories? Well, I actually first start by doing categories (tops, bottoms), then separate by colour (white, colours, black) and THEN by subcategory. Yes, this might sound a bit crazy but it’s not and I promise it does become second nature. It honestly is key for choosing pieces that go well together. It will help you quickly score the perfect outfit.
Stick to same type of hangers
This is so crucial for OCD me. First let’s all agree on something, wire hangers MUST go! They are too thin, bend over time and create weird stretch marks. It is NO BUENO! Plastics hangers are better but please stick to one colour (white preferable). I prefer velvet hangers. First, they are grippy and prevent your clothes from sliding off. Second, they actually help you save space, truly! Finally, they are actually quite affordable considering other options. It is said wooden hangers are the best since they are sturdy but frankly I have always find velvet hangers to be sturdy enough even for my husband’s suits. Whichever hanger you end up choosing, please stick to ONE colour. K, thanks!
