Happy March Book Club! Everyone at Pretty and Smart Co is super excited for Women’s History Month. With most people still stuck at home, it’s easy to fall into a rut. Remember, whether you’re in the office or working from your kitchen table you’re still the same, amazing, driven person. (Bonus points if you’ve got kids to care for too). So, with everything that’s changed since last March, there’s no better time to broaden our minds with a good book.
This month’s Book Club pick comes to us from Cassandra!
March Book Club Pick:
Untamed
By Glennon Doyle
Judging the book by its (back) cover:
This is how you find yourself. There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.
Why we love it (summed by Cassandra):
In my early twenties, when navigating through life, I have constantly had this thought in my head “This is it? There has to be more.” This burning question has pushed me to be more emotional, vulnerable and adventurous. Because of it, I have travelled more, demanded more for myself when it comes to relationships and it has given me a greater sense of what I want out of life. I have been overwhelmingly happy in many instances, but I constantly know that there’s just better out there for me and I want to live my imagination, not just what is socially constructed.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be grand. If I want to stay home one night, I will be true to myself and stay home, despite what that looks like to others. If I want to rent a condo for one year even though people are telling me to save for a house, I will live the way I want to live. I will not succumb to one-sided relationships because it looks good to everyone around me. Am I truly happy and fulfilled? That is what I chase. I will continue to live my truth. Everyone should live their imagination and what is inside of them itching to come out, since we only have one life to live.
TLDR: There is joy and peace in not striving to meet other people’s expectations. Live life for you!
