Haircare Routine For Summer 2020

haircare routine

Welcome Summer 2020, oh how I’ve missed the sunshine and heat!  It’s been a long winter – to say the least and I’m ready to get outside and lose the parka.  When it comes to my hair however, this season always serves as a reminder that having a tried and true haircare routine is critical.  For years, I’ve struggled to get to a point of confidence when it comes to my summer locks but I think I’ve finally nailed it.  If you find yourself consistently reaching for hair elastics and headbands as we edge further into summer weather – check out my mane taming tips below:

Use a moisturizing cream – on wet & dry hair

Admittedly, I only recently started using a moisturizing cream on my hair however I’m regretting not introducing a product like this into my haircare routine sooner; not only does it brighten my blonde but it completely eliminates the endless tugging and ripping on my wet tresses after I wash my hair.  I recommend using a dime sized amount on wet hair and a pea sized amount on dry hair after blow-drying.  If you dread going to bed with wet hair but are rarely satisfied with the heat-dried look – this will change your life.  A few of my favourites include:

Add some volume!

During the summer months, I frequently revert to adding extensions to keep my hair looking thick and full; my natural hair is very fine and usually falls flat in no time at all.  I can easily spend 45 minutes blow-drying with a round brush only to have it lose all of its lustre the minute I leave the house.  As much as I love my extensions however, the steep price and monthly visits to my hairdresser isn’t always ideal.  This summer, I’ve decided to take a breather from my extensions and instead introduce a quality volumizing product and I’m quite pleased with the results! Following a hair wash, I use a small amount on damp hair pre-blow-dry and voila!  What I once thought of as a frivolous addition to my haircare routine is now a staple!

A few of my favourites include:

Skip the daily washes and buy a new hat

For YEARS, I was a firm believer that daily hair washing was the only way to revitalize my fine hair each morning.  I would never entertain the thought of skipping even one day without a full shampoo/blow-dry/heat-styling product.  When I became a mother however, time was of the essence and I was forced to condense my morning routine; daily washing/styling was no longer an option.  For those that are already add the blissful life stage of 1-2 washes per week – you don’t need this advice.

If you’re not however, please believe me when I say that cutting out daily washes can be done but you must be patient.  Start my skipping every other wash for 3-4 weeks; following this – you will find that easily adding one more day without washing is fairly simple.  I currently wash my hair once every five days and I don’t use a dry shampoo in between washes (personally, I don’t find them effective).  Trust me when I say – you can do it! And there’s no better time to start than hat season – so grab your favourite ball cap and fedora and give it a try.

Hair masks are heaven

Do you find yourself staying up later during the summer months as we find ourselves basking in longer daylight hours? If your answer is yes, and you find yourself soaking up your evenings vs. crashing on the couch at 8p.m. then why not use this time to introduce a weekly or bi-weekly hair mask? (personally I prefer weekly).  Hair masks assist in re-hydrating your hair and scalp following the daily drying effects of a hot sun.  Personally, I like to apply a hair mask once a week in the evening and let it soak in as I catch up on my latest Netflix obsession.  I guarantee your hair will never feel better in the morning following this much-needed treatment.  A few of my favourites include:

Skip the straightener

I ADORE my straightening iron.  In the winter, I find myself reaching for it nearly every single day.  During the summer however, I like to give my hair a much needed break.  Additionally, I’ve found that heat styling every day in the summer gives me that “over-prepped” look that’s simply unnecessary.  A little styling goes a long way in the summer and my go-to mantra is – less is more.  My daily haircare routine in the summer consists of a quick comb-through, a small application of moisturizing cream, and a volumizing spray – THAT’S IT.  From someone that obsesses over her hair, I guarantee you this will provide you that beachy yet polished hair style that suits both your kitchen and/or boardroom table.

Don’t let the summer heat hold your hair back from looking it’s finest.  Introduce some quality products to your haircare routine and let your mirror be your judge.  Looking for more insight on how to keep your skin and hair looking it’s very best?
