The Weekly Pretty Brief – September 18, 2026

1. Hair Loss Has Become Big Beauty Business

Hair loss is moving from a private concern to one of beauty’s fastest-growing categories.

Vogue reports that searches related to hair loss have risen sharply, while retailers including Cult Beauty and Boots have seen meaningful growth in scalp-care and hair-loss products. The category is also becoming less male-focused as women look for solutions connected to stress, hormones, weight loss and aging.

Why it matters: Beauty increasingly succeeds when it solves a real problem rather than inventing another trend. Consumers are also becoming more demanding about evidence, which creates an opening for brands that can combine attractive products with credible science.

2. M&S Took the High Street to London Fashion Week. The Real Story Is the Turnaround.

Marks & Spencer’s runway debut was about more than a fashion show. It was a public demonstration of a broader turnaround that has touched product, supply chain, stores, marketing and digital.

CEO Stuart Machin has been trying to make the company more stylish without making it unrecognizable to the millions of customers who already trust it. The London Fashion Week collection leaned into that balance: polished enough for a runway, but priced and designed for the high street.

Why it matters: Reinvention is often treated as a total break from the past. M&S is making the opposite bet: keep the trust, improve the execution and make the brand culturally relevant again.

3. Grocery Inflation Is Finally Below Headline Inflation. Canadians May Not Feel the Relief Yet.

Grocery prices rose 2.8% year over year in August, below Canada’s 3.0% headline inflation rate for the first time since July 2024.

That is movement in the right direction, but slower inflation is not the same thing as lower prices. It means prices are rising more slowly than before. For families whose grocery bills already climbed substantially during the previous inflation surge, that distinction matters.

Why it matters: Economic statistics can improve before household finances feel better. Canadians do not shop against last month’s inflation rate; they shop against the dollars left in their bank account after housing, taxes, utilities and everything else. Affordability is ultimately measured at the kitchen table.

4. H&M Is Using AI to Turn the Runway Into an Interactive Experience

H&M stepped directly into fashion’s AI debate at London Fashion Week.

Working with photographer Nick Knight and ShowStudio, the retailer created an AI-powered installation that transformed still photography and illustration into fashion films in real time, reacting to the movement of models and guests.

Why it matters: The most interesting use of AI in fashion may not be replacing photographers, models or designers. It may be creating experiences that were difficult or impossible before. The challenge for brands is using the technology without erasing the human creativity that gave people a reason to care in the first place.

5. Warren Buffett Steps Down. Berkshire’s Succession Plan Is Now Complete.

Warren Buffett has stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway after more than six decades at the company, moving into the honorary role of chairman emeritus.

His son Howard Buffett becomes non-executive chairman, while Greg Abel, who succeeded Buffett as CEO earlier this year, remains responsible for running the business.

Why it matters: Berkshire may be one of the best examples of succession planning at scale. The transition was discussed for years, responsibilities were separated and the next generation of leadership was already operating before the founder fully stepped aside. For entrepreneurs, the lesson is uncomfortable but useful: a durable company has to be able to exist without the person who built it.
