Having your heart broken is the most painful, disorienting, and downright humiliating experience you can ever face. Especially when it’s the kind of relationship where your whole future was already so clear. I thought I had it all figured out, my person, the plan, the path, and the comfort of knowing I was loved, happy, and safe. And then suddenly… I had nothing. It felt like everything I had built, everything I believed in, everything I loved, went up in flames. I was left standing in the ruins of my life, not knowing who I was or how to be.
It’s in these moments that the world around you seems to keep moving forward. Friends are falling in love, family members celebrate their successes, and strangers on social media thrive. Yet, you’re stuck in this place, trying to piece together your heart and a new version of yourself that now seems foggy.
Hitting Rock Bottom
But here’s what no one tells you. When you hit rock bottom, and I mean true rock bottom, there isn’t anything lower than that. You can only go up… but you have to choose to, YOU have to crawl yourself out. No one’s coming to save you. The motivation to move on with your life has to come from you. And if you stay still, you stay stuck, which doesn’t do you any favours.
At some point, in the middle of all this pain, I noticed I started to shift my perspective. Like I could finally see the version of myself I wanted to become, and I felt proud of her. I’d lost touch with the woman who was capable, confident, and deserving. I’m not saying I’ve healed overnight, but I’ve made a choice…I’m moving forward.
Getting My Sparkle Back
Now, I’m rewriting my story. I’m making decisions without thinking about anyone else but myself. I’m slowly taking back my sparkle and gaining the motivation to restart my life as a single girl. It’s been a rough journey, but over the last couple of months I’ve really surprised myself. I’m finally, truly, really excited about this life that I’m building and for the first time in a long time, I feel like me again.
How Rebuilding Begins
There is no cure to heartbreak, there is no timeline or “how to” guide, but there is a turning point. That moment when you decide that you’re ready to rebuild your life. That’s when the real change starts. Turning your heartbreak into motivation comes with time and dedication to yourself, and here’s how I’m doing it.
For me, it started with therapy. Not because I needed fixing, but because I needed the space to hear my own thoughts and feelings and understanding them. My therapist, who is a completely neutral person with no ties to my world, reminded me that my pain wasn’t too big, I’m not asking for too much, that my feelings are valid, and that I am allowed to take up space. It grounded me. If you’re navigating heartbreak or even just life in general, I’d recommend it more than anything.
Family & Friendships
The people you surround yourself with are often a reflection of who you are as a person. My family and my girls have shown up for me in ways I can’t even express. Making sure I ate when I couldn’t, holding me through the ugliest cries, getting me out into the world, making me laugh till the pain was gone and reminding me to prioritize movement as a form of self-respect. These are the kinds of people I surround myself with. People whose hearts are as big as my own and love me without conditions and regardless of my flaws. Their unwavering love and support helped me see the path forward.
Surround yourself with people who will stand with you through all of life’s challenges and choose those individuals wisely.
Letting Go
I’ve cried more times than I can count. Spending too much time praying to God or the Universe to rewind the clock. There is no word big enough to articulate the heartbreak that leaves you with your stomach in knots, your chest physically hurting and not being able to catch your breath from grieving this person that’s still alive somewhere in the world. But there comes a time when you realize waiting for someone to choose you, is the slowest form of self-destruction.
So, I let go. Of them. Of the life I thought we’d live. Of the version of myself I wanted to become. And in doing that, I’ve made space for myself and the self-growth that comes with that. I’ve allowed room for My dreams. My voice. My decisions.
Leaning Into the Unknown
The moment I stopped holding on, the possibilities of my life seemed endless. I started asking myself new questions. What kind of life do I want? What makes me feel alive? Where do I want to live? What career risks excite me? And most importantly, who do I want to be?
For the first time in years, I’m making choices that are just for me. While this still feels scary and uncomfortable and unpredictable, it’s starting to feel like me. Like freedom. Like control. Like I don’t give a damn about who’s judging my choices because they’re mine to make.
The Start of Something New
Now I no longer blame myself for this broken heart of mine. I’m choosing me, over and over again and discovering how powerful that can be. I’m still gathering the pieces of my heart, one by one, but I’m not afraid of this new life anymore. In fact, I feel empowered by it.
So, here’s what I’ll leave you with: Become someone they wouldn’t recognize. Someone they couldn’t reach even if they tried. Show up for yourself, chase what makes you feel good, and make those changes you were once too scared to consider.
Because you can move on. And you will. Why not?
Be Motivated. Be Proud. And if nothing else, prove to yourself that you can start over. Not for them… But for you.
