Winter Travel Ideas an Hour or Two from Toronto
Now that the snow has started to fall, and the holiday season is in full swing – it is time to think winter vacay planning. If you are like me, you are constantly looking for the next outing to plan or vacation to be had. I am sure my friends and family (especially my husband) get tired of all my “ideas” being sent to them at random times throughout the day. But ’tis the season. Time to reconnect and think about adventure more than business. I find that in my business, I get super busy and tend to have tunnel vision. I end up working very long days and often don’t see my friends and family unless it is an important event that I know I can’t miss. But the big life events are always where the quality time happens. Here are my top five winter getaway ideas, that will help you to reconnect with your loved ones.
1. Distillery District
Distillery offers a beautiful Christmas market that can be a one day or weekend getaway. Running until December 22nd, The Toronto Christmas Market has something for everyone. Whether it is a photo with Santa for the kids, or delicious food for the adults, there are unique experiences to be had around every corner. Different vendors set up food stands with culinary experiences from all different cultural influences. Vendors with Christmas inspired toys and goodies have their traditional market stalls. The lights and décor is perfect for romantic photos. On weekends there is often a long line up, sometimes over 2 hours, so plan ahead. One tip – plan to have dinner at one of the restaurants and they can offer you express line passes with free entrance.
Right now, the Christmas market is partnering with the Royal York hotel. So if you want to add a stay to your excursion, the Royal York is always festive this time of year!
Happy Christmas Market – ing!
2. Niagara on the Lake
Christmas is not complete for me without visiting the adorable streets of Niagara on the Lake. If you plan to stay overnight, Prince of Wales has the most value for your dollar. Not only are the hallways decorated with Christmas décor, but the restaurant and rooms offer a cozy vibe that will get anyone into the Christmas spirit. The location of this hotel is right on the Main Street. So, if you want to walk up and down the shops or catch a play, your location couldn’t be better. There is a shuttle that runs throughout the evening and can drive patrons to nearby wineries or restaurants. They can also travel between Vintage hotels which you may want to use for spa services. My favorite spa in Niagara on the Lake is the 100 Fountain Spa at Pillar and the Post because it offers outdoor pools (Even in winter), which is a beautiful experience. Check out some of the winery specials, a favourite being the Wayne Gretzky winery as it has both whiskey and wine tastings.
3. Blue Mountain/ Scandinave Spa
If you have never been to Blue Mountain Village over the Christmas season, you will be pleasantly surprised with its bustling village. From restaurants to outdoor patios with fire pits, the village has both a posh après ski culture with fine dining. Or, a relaxed college vibe depending on where you choose to dine and spend your time on your winter getaway. The village suites look directly over the shops and bars. So it can offer a perfect spot for people who want to stay out late or take part in the festivities from the comfort of their own suite. If you want something in a quieter part of the village, the Westin Trillium Hotel may be best. Still accessible to the village, this hotel offers beautiful outdoor amenities and an onsite gym. However, it is nestled further away from the hustle bustle. All accommodations offer great proximity to the ski hills.
If you are craving a unique spa experience, then the Scandinave Spa is highly recommended. The spa requires you to make reservations well in advance. But, is worth the short trek if you want to venture off the Blue Mountain grounds for a spa service. If you prefer to spend the day using the outdoor pools at the spa, you can line up on a first come, first served basis. They take a limited amount of people per day, so arrive early!
4. Hockley Valley
Last year my husband and I wanted to try a new spot around the holidays. We researched a few places but ultimately decided to try Hockley Valley. On a quest for something chic and unique to do on New Years Eve, we encouraged another couple to come with us to the new years eve party. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, we were impressed with this hotel. Not only is it renovated with newer amenities, it sits on a property with ski hills and is close enough to the Adamo Winery that they can offer winery tours and excursions. We upgraded our room to the two level suite for added prestige while entertaining our friends prior to the party. Got dressed to impress, and went down for a wonderful dinner and dance party. From the food to the party, we had an exceptional time. Hockley Valley offers both an adults only party and a family party. There is also a well reviewed spa on site and ski hills.
5. JW Marriott
There is something special about Muskoka in the winter. The tree lined roads, the frozen lakes, the cottage country feeling and of course, the fire pits truly add a special feeling around the holidays. Situated on Lake Rosseau, the JW Marriott Muskoka offers a beautiful destination for couples or families. The rooms have a cottage feeling, with fireplaces and balconies overlooking the beautiful grounds and lake. There are activities which include snowmobiling, ice skating and snowshoeing nearby. The restaurant on site is a fabulous destination for a unique culinary experience. The entire resort is family friendly if you opt to make it a family vacation. The spa at JW is second to none and includes indoor pools as well as an outdoor hot tub open year round. When we visited this resort, we swam outside in the winter, during a light hail storm and it was fun as well as romantic. I highly recommend checking out this wonderful destination.
