Treating Yourself Isn’t Selfish, It’s Necessary

When life gets busy and overwhelming, always remember, treating yourself isn’t selfish. In fact, it’s necessary.

I am definitely known to splurge and not think twice. Do I go a bit overboard at times? My social circle would probably say yes without hesitation. Truth is, life’s too short. I am a firm believer in work hard, play hard.

I do like to try new trends and experience new things, but there are just certain things that consistently make me happy and feel at ease.

The Hair Salon

One place that truly is a treat in the best way possible, is the hair salon. Some people avoid the hair salon like the plague, because they are afraid of losing or destroying their hair. I am the opposite, because I have found something tried and true. I like to visit every 4-6 months. My favourite place to get my hair done is at Le Petit Salon in Ottawa. I have been going there since 2016. They just recently opened up a second location on York Street in the downtown area.

There are 3 main reasons as to why I love the hair salon:

I get to update and refresh my look

Feeling confident is really satisfying and it’s good for you! I will always believe that what is inside matters most, but feeling good on the outside too is healthy and fun. Every time I go to the salon, I like to take a couple inches off of my hair. It is literally a metaphor for cutting off any dead ends, not just with my hair, but in life.

The salon is aesthetically pleasing

I also love this salon in particular because of its brick walls, fancy mirrors, modern finishes, art work and overall loft style. The aesthetic gets my creative juices flowing. I then feel inspired to bring certain aspects of the place into new wardrobe or home decor pieces. It makes me feel like I’m in a new world for a couple of hours. Everyone deserves a little escape once in a while.

It is a mix of social and relaxing

When I enter the salon, I get a cappuccino to start. I then vent about my life and most recent events with my hairdresser. My hairdresser honestly feels more like a dear friend. We both chat about almost anything. Of course, it is up to you with what you want to share or not. Some hairdressers are obviously more quieter than others and some customers don’t want to talk at all, and that is completely fine! Personally, I look forward to reconnecting. Since I am paying for the experience, I want it to feel like I am on a luxurious retreat, updating my look and talking to a friend all in one!

P.S. If you’re the type of person that only visits a hair salon once a year or every couple years, the nail salon is a good choice too.

Shoes

I am very into fashion. What I always like to buy and can never get enough of, is shoes. They can easily elevate any outfit. I will admit, I rarely ever go into a clothing store or a mall anymore. I get inspired from magazines, websites and Instagram accounts and purchase everything online. There is something therapeutic about it. I believe if you set goals for yourself and achieve them, getting a new pair of shoes you are eyeing can be a wonderful reward.

A Good Book

An inexpensive way to treat yourself is through reading. You can even borrow a book from friends if you don’t want to buy your own. After a long day of work, I like to read a book, whether it be curled up on the couch, or in my hammock. I feel like reading a good book on a plane or train also helps to reduce any travel stress or anxiety.

Towards the beginning of the current global pandemic, I was feeling a lot of emotions. I didn’t know how to handle the isolation. I turned to a book called ‘What A Time To Be Alone: The Slumflower’s Guide to Why You Are Already Enough’ by Chidera Eggerue. This light read was truly a treat. It reinforced my love for being independent and doing things alone at times. I then became empowered and my spirits were revived. I was reminded why I don’t like to settle in life and in love. My train of thought was recovered.

If you are at a time in your life where you feel like at one point the universe was not reciprocating the same love and energy you were giving out, but it’s almost there and it is close, read this book. Pairing a good book with a cup of tea, or wine can be very satisfying. Another great way to treat yourself is to get involved in a book-club.

Socializing with Friends

Although I enjoy time to myself, I need a balance. One way I stay truly happy is through hanging out with my friends. I am very fortunate to have a genuine and reliable group of strong and kind girlfriends (subtle shout-out). We really like to try new restaurants and different activities. Our classic is simply going out for one or two drinks on a patio or in a cocktail lounge.

This image is of 3 drinks on a table at a spa. The drinks are a sangria, mimosa and strawberry mojito. This spa day and socializing was a way of treating ourselves and we did not feel selfish about it.

Sometimes while I am busying working during the week, knowing that I get to see them on the weekend really lifts my mood and gets me so excited. They allow me to speak freely and listen. They guide me and have my best interest at heart. This is a reminder to book time in your schedule to catch up with friends, even if it’s only for an hour.

Carbs

I love carbs. I’ll never stop loving them. They’re so bad but so good. Coming from an Italian family, I grew up on thick crusty bread, cannolis and tiramisu. As I am writing this, I am triggered and tempted. During certain times throughout my life, I would really try to resist these treats and deprive myself. I now have found a good balance and have no guilt or shame. I understand that everything can be great in moderation.

In the summer specifically, I like to indulge in a light lemon tart with tea. To me, it’s the ultimate treat in dessert form. Indulging in this type of treat, baking or visiting a cute bakery can be easy and delightful.

In reading this piece, I hope that you feel inspired and now believe that treating yourself is an unselfish part of life. If you’re also in the mood to de-stress, check out Brooklyn’s post about diffusers, tea, bubble baths and more. I’m on board for that.
