Last night was one of the world’s largest movements for nature, Earth Hour. Earth Hour began in 2007 when World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) encouraged 2.2 million people to turn off their lights for one hour. It has since turned into a worldwide event that supports action against climate change. This got me thinking… Thinking about other ways I can help our environment and how I can live a more sustainable lifestyle. So with some research, I’ve created a list of 10 ways to go green this spring that can help you achieve a greener and more sustainable lifestyle. Check them out below!
1. Invest in Using Reusable Bags
*A pretty & smart tip* – Make sure you are washing these bags frequently in order to prevent the spread of bacteria. If you cant remember the last time you washed your bags, go do it NOW! There are also some really great reusable produce bags that are worth the investment. They include the tare weight on the tag as well which makes for a really easy check out and come in all different sizes.
2. Hang Your Clothes to Dry Instead of Using the Dryer
With nicer weather approaching, this is a great and efficient way to dry your clothes without having to use the dryer. Plus its a great excuse to get some sun on your face and a few minutes of fresh air.
3. Unplug Items that Aren’t Being Used
Check around your house for items you don’t use daily and unplug them. Even though they aren’t being used, they are still drawing power. Do this and save that energy! For bonus points you can have things connected to a power bar and have the power bar switched on for when you’re using your items and off for the rest of the time (especially at night!).
4. Meatless Monday
Try reducing the number of animal products that you are consuming. It’s good for you and good for the planet!
5. Shop At Your Local Farmer’s Market
A great way to support your local farmers and get fresh organic produce. Also get to know what’s in season in your region and talk to the farmers to learn more about where your food is coming from. It can be so insightful to learn about how the produce is harvested, how the farmers preserve their crops and their origins.
6. Switch From Plastic Water Bottles to Glass Bottles
Lots of people are already doing this, but this is just a friendly reminder to try it out for yourself! There are so many cute options and depending on your daily water intake (some of us are better than others) this can be really impactful.
7. Use up that Fruit
When you notice your fruit is beginning to over-ripen, make popsicles or smoothies! This is a great and tasty way to eat up all that fruit that might have been thrown out instead. Also a little hack to make your fruit last longer – store it in a diluted water vinegar bath.
8. Start Composting
If you haven’t already, start composting! It’s a good way to minimize the amount of garbage you send to landfills.
9. Support Companies with Ethical Practices
This is a great way to support brands that are making an effort to be more conscious of their sustainability efforts.
10. Out With the old and in With the Improved
Repair or refinish broken items instead of purchasing new ones.
I’m always looking for ideas to live a greener and more sustainable life. With plenty of great resources and many more ideas shared by others, you too can live a greener and more sustainable lifestyle. Let us know what you’ve tried in the comments below!
