Skincare is Self-care: Part Two, Luxury Edition

skincare is self-care

Building on my skincare is self-care 1.0 last week, I bring you the “skincare is self-care 2.0” luxury edition. As I mentioned earlier, over the course of the past year my skin has become very dry and irritated. These sudden changes in my skin have required adding a few additional items to my skincare routine. Although these items are at the luxury price point, we are pretty, smart and savvy, so read on to learn about ways you can try these luxury products to ensure they are worth the money.

I had a lot of fun adding some different products to my skincare routines. I tried many of the products so you don’t have to. Personally, I gravitated to buying from Sephora because of their user-friendly website but feel free to shop around on our friend google. Don’t forget that Sephora has a 30-day return policy, so if you aren’t loving your luxury priced purchases, you have options.
Charlotte Tilbury Charlotte’s Magic Serum Crystal Elixir
This was a fun splurge that was more for self-care than skincare. I love Charlotte Tilbury makeup but haven’t spent a lot of time exploring their skincare. However, this was a fun product that had been sitting in my “Sephora Favourites” for a while before I “hit add to cart.”

This serum contains Vitamin C, Niacinimide and other helpful and scientifically tested ingredients. However, the reason I decided to splurge on this product was because of QUARTZ POWDER, AMETHYST POWDER, RUBY POWDER, in the serum.
Crystals In Skincare?
At this point, you are probably thinking “what the heck do gems have to do with skincare?” To be honest, not much in the main stream science community. There aren’t any studies showing that these ingredients do much for the skin.
But I love the idea of the energy of crystals and have some chunks of amethyst in my bedroom for its “woo woo” energy. If you are interested in learning more about learning about crystal healing you can watch a short video here. Go ahead and chuckle, but entertainment is often in short-order in lockdown (once you have watched all of the cool things on Netflix).
I haven’t used this product regularly so I can’t say that I have seen a huge transformation in my skin. I only use this product when I feel my soul needs an extra boost. When I use this serum I imagine carrying the benefits of the crystals throughout the day and not just leaving them on my nightstand with chunks of Amethyst and Moonstone.
Issues stemming from isolation are problem during lockdown. Not only does skincare connect me to the “skintellectual” online communities but the benefits of the crystals in skincare also connecting me to generations of people have drawn strength for crystals too.

Will I buy it again? Maybe. I like that Sephora sells the small size, so it was a nice treat for my soul.

YTTP: Youth To The People Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask with Vitamin C
Although I was intrigued, because Hyram and I have similar skincare philosophies we have different skin types and needs, so I didn’t rush out to buy it. However, I received a sample of this product and was hooked.
Although I have loved skincare since my early teen years, sleep masks were new to me in the past year. Instead of the more popular clay or treatment facemasks that are applied to clean skin, and left on from 5-20 minutes, before being rinsed off, sleep masks are applied as the last step in a skincare routine and left on all night. Sometimes they are applied instead of a moisturizer and some use them after their moisturizer.
This mask doesn’t have any added fragrance. However, some of the ingredients used do have a light scent which gives this product and subtle yet delicious aroma.
The Youth To The People Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask with Vitamin C has a slightly whipped texture but that is perfect for all skin types. It is so luxurious that you will wish you had enough to jump into a bathtub of it.
If too much sun exposure, or stress from the past 18 months has left your skin a little dull, this brightening mask will be your new BFF. It is just nourishing enough for all skin types, has a brightening effect, and the dreamy texture and subtle scent will make you feel rich and pampered. Best of all, Sephora offers a small size, so you don’t need to commit to the full-sized (and $60 price tag).
Multi-Function Eye Cream
I didn’t realize that I needed an eye cream until I needed an eye cream. If you follow the online skincare community, eye creams are a hot topic.
This Multi-Function Eye Cream is magical Unicorn dust

Unlike sunscreen, eye creams are under the “you won’t get skin cancer and die without them” category. Therefore, many skinfluencers preach that you don’t actually need them and that you can get away with just using your moisturizer around your eyes. EVERY SINGER PERSON who has told me this nonsense is young, fresh, and childless.
As the “grandma” over here at PSCO (I just had my 38th birthday), I have to say that this eye cream is magical eye crack. Yes, it is in the luxury category but it lasts for a long time and no other eye cream I have ever tried has delivered the same results. If I travel and forget this magical cream and just try to use a gentle moisturizer under my eyes, I feel like I age 10 years in a one week vacation.
I can’t pinpoint which particular ingredient makes the difference in this product but it has 60-day money-back satisfaction guarantee. I dare you to STOP using it.
If you are looking for some luxurious add-on items to level-up your skincare routine and nourish your soul, these three products are a great place to start. All three of the products mentioned above either come in a small trial size or have a 30-60 day money back guarantee or return policy so you can’t go wrong!
