Healthy Swaps on Classic Super Bowl Snacks

Healthy superbowl snacks

If any of you know me, you know I’m always trying to find ways to stay healthy while also enjoying all the typical holidays and celebrations that happen throughout the year. This Sunday, is Superbowl Sunday! Super Bowl Sunday attracts die hard fans, casual fans or just those that want a reason to eat some delicious food and watch those hilarious (and not so hilarious) commercials. Honestly- Super Bowl Sunday has become less about the game itself and more about parties, snacks and games. But don’t worry- I’ve got you covered with six healthy swaps on classic super bowl snacks.

Obviously with the pandemic this year- we won’t be having large parties with family and friends but we can still gather with those in our household, our social bubble or have a watch party via Zoom! Once you have all the COVID friendly logistics sorted out it’s time to focus in on the best part of Super Bowl Sunday… the food! Here are my healthy swaps for some traditional super bowl snacks that are both tasty and healthy!

Chicken and beef skewers are a healthy swap for traditional wings

Classic Super Bowl Food #1:

Wings: Chicken wings are the most popular Super Bowl food. While delicious they are often covered in sugary sauces and dipped in blue cheese.

Healthy Swap #1:

Chicken, beef or pork skewers accompanied with grilled veggies or some fiber rich celery to keep you feeling full. Also, making your own dip for the skewers can cut back on unnecessary sugars.

Classic Super Bowl Food #2:

Tacos: traditional tacos with ground beef, cheese and sour cream while delicious are just BORING.

Healthy Swap #2:

Lettuce wraps filled with shredded chicken or ground turkey. I recommend using Bibb lettuce as taco shells. Sauté your meat with grilled onions and veggies and top with salsa and a little guacamole. YUM!

Air popped popcorn is a healthy alternative to chips

Classic Super Bowl Food #3:

Chips: are a cornerstone of any get together.

Healthy Swap #3:

Air popped popcorn is a healthy, whole grain snack that is relatively high in protein and fibre! If you’re looking to spice up your popcorn you can:

  • Lightly mist with olive oil and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and pepper
  • Sprinkle with chili powder and sea salt
  • Top with nutritional yeast (MY FAV) which is a vegan source of vitamin B-12. It adds a delicious cheesy flavour and is also a source of protein
  • A few dark chocolate shavings and dusting of cinnamon

Classic Super Bowl Food #4:

Sweet treats like candy, cookies and brownies

Healthy Swap #4:

Try nature’s candy aka FRUIT. Include grapes, berries and cubed watermelon to your Super Bowl spread. Fruit will help to satisfy your sweet tooth while also contributing vitamins, fibre and keeping you hydrated.  For a cute tip- try cubing up your fruit, putting them on skewers and and drizzling them with dark chocolate! Super yummy and super cute!

Classic Super Bowl Food #5:

Take out pizza! While delicious take out pizza is covered with extra cheese, pepperoni, sausage and a vast amount of grease!

Healthy Swap #5:

Try making your own pizza and covering it with healthy veggies. You can even make the crust out of cauliflower for a low carb option! Time saving tip: if you’re not in the mood to make pizza from scratch you can get these amazing pizza crusts from Costco. I wasn’t able to find the link on the Costco site as each location varies but stop by your local Costco and see if you can find them! They’re so easy, so delicious and genuinely healthy!

Classic Super Bowl Food #6:

Alcohol: while not technically a food, alcohol tends to be a staple at all Super bowl parties. Beer, wine and high calorie cocktails seem to be the go-to for this occasion.

Healthy swap #6:

Generally, if you’re trying to stay on the healthy side I recommend keeping alcohol consumption to a minimum! Choose drinks like red wine, vodka sodas or light beers. If you’re looking for non-alcoholic drinks for the occasion try infused waters, flavoured coconut water, or lime and soda water.

Whether you’re looking for a few healthy swaps or an entirely healthy spread, I hope I’ve got you covered here with my healthy swaps on classic Super Bowl snacks. You won’t have to sacrifice flavour for health with these swaps- trust me.
