As the weather gets warmer, fitness fads flood social media timelines. Although Belly Burning Workouts and green smoothie recipes can be tempting, there are far better ways to introduce fitness and healthy lifestyle choices into your Summer 2022. Here are some of my best suggestions for a healthier summer!
Optimize the Warm Weather
Warmer weather and longer days make fitness instantly easier. Whether you choose a walk outside, day drip to a nearby park or hiking spot, or take advantage of a local public pool, beautiful weather is a sure incentive to stay active outside. You can also opt for an outdoor yoga class or bring your weights outside for circuit training in the sun! Use some of the tips found in this Guide to At Home Workouts to inspire your outdoor fitness!
Adding Fitness to Your Summer Plans
Instead of drinking by the pool, outdoor activities are a great way to incorporate fitness into your pool party while still soaking up the sun. Games such as pool volleyball, bocce ball, spike ball, or even a corn hole toss are simple, inexpensive games that everyone can partake in. You can also add movement to your summer plans by choosing to walk instead of using a cart while golfing, riding bikes to grab an ice cream, or even challenging your partner to a game of tennis or pickleball.
Ignore the Fitness Fads
Hyper-focusing on spot-reducing fat is a fitness obsession that is not only exhausting but impossible! Although there are countless online personal trainers demonstrating “Ab Workout for a Six Pack” and “Toning Leg Workouts to Reduce Cellulite,” these workouts are more clickbait than anything. Instead of trying to lose fat solely in your stomach, arms, or thighs, you are far better off trying a full body or HIIT workout to gain and tone muscle. Some of my favourite online full-body workouts include this pilates workout and this HIIT workout. With all of this in mind, it is most important to remember that your “summer body” is the body you are in, not the one you believe you should have!
Water, Water, Water
Although drinking water should not be a summer-only activity, the heat and sunshine paired with your newfound love for outdoor workouts should cause a serious increase in your water consumption. Not only is drinking water important for regular bowel movements and protecting your muscles and tissues, but it will prevent dehydration and fuel your workouts. It is especially important to be hydrating when in the sun to replenish the fluids lost while sweating. It’s best to keep your water bottle full, on you at all times, and filled with ice this summer!
Summer-Inspired Healthy Recipes
To match your new fitness routine, incorporating healthy, summer recipes is a refreshing way to add nutrients, vegetables, and whole foods to your diet. Take advantage of seasonal produce and outdoor barbecuing, while experimenting with new ingredients to spice up your summer dinners. For some inspiration, try this link for 59 Healthy Summer Recipes!
Summer fitness doesn’t need to be as intense and complex as many online articles and influencers make it seem! Introducing a consistent and enjoyable fitness lifestyle into your summer plans can be as simple as outdoor workouts and summer-inspired healthy recipes.
