Staying Mentally Fit During Social Isolation

stay home

From watching the news every hour to constantly scrolling social media it’s easy to get bogged down by what is going on around us. You are not alone in this. As we all find ourselves in a state of extended social isolation it is so important to take care of ourselves. That means both mentally and emotionally. Keep reading below for my top five tips for staying mentally fit during social isolation.

Remind Yourself Why

It makes social isolation a little bit easier if you think of the big picture. Remember that we are practicing it not only for ourselves but for elderly neighbours, grandparents and those that may be more vulnerable. Thank yourself for participating in a selfless act and work to keep your mind as busy as possible. We all deserve a pat on the back right now.

Take Breaks from the News

Literally unplug yourself from the news and other social media for a small chunk of time every day. This helps to distance yourself from what’s going on and can help combat those feelings of anxiety or a general sense of being overwhelmed. If you are watching, reading or listening to the news try to focus on reliable, up to date and accurate information. This is so important. I cannot stress it enough. Don’t let yourself get worked up over something that isn’t even true. I recommend checking out sources such as the Centre for Disease Control and World Health Organization. Doing so will also help with your anxious feelings as you will likely feel more informed.

Create a Routine

Without routine we drown in details. However, I don’t mean a rigid routine just try and have a general schedule for when you wake up, eat and go to bed, something that is ideally similar to your schedule prior to social isolation. Focus on things that are in your control! If you are working from home be sure to set a specific schedule for play, work and rest. A schedule can help to make sure you are staying on track which will improve your productivity and help to prevent you from working long hours. Exercise

Be kind to yourself and make time to move around. Exercise has been proven to boost and support the immune system and is a great tool for managing anxiety and stress through the production of stress relieving hormones called endorphins! Exercise can also help you fill your day and combat feelings of boredom! Check out my guide to at home workouts here. I touch on the few pieces of equipment every home gym should have and include a sample workout anyone can do from the comfort of their home!

Make Time to Unwind

Remember to make time for things that make you happy! Spend time reading, writing, knitting, meditating, cooking (remember to practice good handwashing!), or doing yoga! Now ladies try not to be too hard on yourself during this time! When our stress levels rise we tend to let go of our positive self-care practices, oftentimes prioritizing other activities like work or household chores. This is the time we need to practice self care the MOST. Don’t be too hard on yourself; watch trashy TV, play with your dog, get enough sleep.

Take time to unwind

That’s all from me! I hope you find these tips helpful. At the very least, that this blog at least served as a welcome distraction from our ever changing world! Sending everyone positive vibes and remember to take time for yourself!
